Fashion mavens growled when they saw this 1986 ad gracing the pages of Dogue magazine. Wait, not Vogue? No, Dogue. Published as a spoof of the famous fashion glossy by pet-accessories entrepreneur Ilene Hochberg, Dogue sniffed down the runways from a dog's-eye view with features like "Microwave Meals for Yuppie Puppies." Naturally, Dogue also lifted a leg on all those dramatic, self-important fashion advertisements, too.
This one, starring a collie presumed to be Lassie, riffed on Blackglama mink's long-running "What Becomes a Legend Most?" campaign. Created in 1968 by Madison Avenue legend Jane Trahey, the original campaign featured faded divas of Hollywood and Broadway modeling the costly coats for Richard Avedon's lens. While the real campaign featured stars from Lauren Bacall to Barbara Stanwyck, it's Lassie—the four-legged star of this made-up ad—that's since become the campaign's most remembered legend.
